Make great things happen

Fully focused on the future?

The Merck Group was born in Germany. In 1668, the pharmacist Friedrich Jacob Merck acquired the Angel Pharmacy located on Luisenplatz in downtown Darmstadt. The pharmacy, which is still owned by the Merck family, is the origin of the world’s oldest pharmaceutical-chemical company.
When it comes to the protection of our environment, the security of our products or equal opportunities at work, our corporate social responsibilty is of hightest importance.
Wherever you work – in the heart of the Rhine-Main region or at our smaller sites in Northern or Southern Germany – you’ll become part of a community. And you’ll thrive in an organization that has not only a long and impressive history of growth, but also a strategic focus on innovation within expanding markets.

Out of a workforce of some 40,000 people in more than 60 countries, around 10,000 work in Germany. And most are based at our Global Headquarters in Darmstadt. Here, well over 8,500 people work on the research and production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals and in central corporate functions.

Encompassing 1.2 square kilometers, the site is home to chemical and preclinical research, central process development and analytical services as well as units of clinical development. Employees also support the company’s business sectors or provide key services in areas like human resources, legal affairs and patents, technical and IT matters, purchasing and logistics, marketing and sales, as well as accounting and controlling.

Some Merck subsidiaries are also located in Darmstadt: Merck Serono GmbH, Merck Consumer Health Care, Merck Selbstmedikation, and Merck Shared Services Europe.

Over the last ten years, Merck has invested more than one billion euros in the Darmstadt site. We made the largest investment in the company’s history to date in plants that are primarily used to manufacture liquid crystals for displays. These plants are setting new standards in production technology, environmental protection, occupational health and safety and workplace organization.

Our second largest production site, Gernsheim is also the second largest employer within Gross-Gerau district. Here we manufacture liquid crystal precursors, effect pigments, sorbents and vapor deposition chemicals. Highly-qualified staff, efficient coordination and teamwork among all business sectors, and state-of-the-art production facilities generate exceptional products. What’s more, they help us build fruitful, long-term relationships with customers and partners.
